1940's Rayon Dress-Powder Room Edition

-with a dirty mirror at that! Dear me, if I keep taking these mirror shots I should really make an effort to clean the mirror. *shrug*
I bought this dress years ago, when it was still only borderline vintage. It never fit well, as I suspect it once had shoulder pads and a matching belt. Still, the beading is enough to help me overlook the flaws, and the colour is perfect for my complexion. I can't wear bright pinks.
I mean, look at that beading, and embroidery.
And the buttons...
Obviously, a dress like this requires a pretty special handbag...
This was a gift from an elderly neighbor years ago. She made it from a kit where you do the embroidery, and send to have it put together. She's long gone, and I really treasure being able to be the caretaker of her needlework.
Seriously, this hair needs professional help. Some days I just want to take a pair of shears and go all pixie on it. I'm pretty sure I will at some point. I wonder if my specs are as smudged as they look in the photo? That would explain a lot. OK, mirror and eyewear get a cleaning today.

That dress is incredibly pretty!

Thank you. I feel like I should give it some respect, and restore the shoulder pads and possibly make a cloth belt, but if haven't done it yet, the odds are looking slim.

It is so nice to hear from you!

P.S. as I was typing this, something just hit my bedroom window pretty hard. At this hour, I'd guess bat, but I'm too freaked out to go downstairs and have a look. I mean, if a bat knocked itself out, there isn't much I could do anyway.

I've been lurking and checking your website out. I can't believe how big Danny has gotten!

We've been dealing with a whole lot up here...we live right in the middle of Canada's bread basket, but Ian and the girls were just diagnosed with celiac disease of all things - so I've been struggling to learn how to feed them without gluten!

Oh no. I can't even begin to imagine what a pain in the behind that must be. Avoiding nuts is a whole hell of a lot easier than avoiding gluten-that's everywhere.

On the positive side, it might finally have everyone feeling well. I remember Mary had symptoms for a long time, but I didn't realise Ian and Frances were as well.

I have zero advice for you, because I don't know squat about Coeliac disease, but I know there are tons of blogs devoted to living with it.

If you find any gluten free products on line that aren't available in Canada, let me know and I can send them to you. As long as you stay under 20 lbs, International shipping rates have dropped really low, at least from this direction.

Good luck with everything.

It's funny, because Frank the Tank is the one who was diagnosed first, and she's the most solid of all, but this spring she started having these strange bouts of violent, well, puking. She would be so sick that she would burst blood vessels in her face and chest, and then she'd be *fine*. The doctor did the blood test for Celiac on a whim, but we really thought she might have some sort of virus. When the tests came back positive, we decided to get the rest of us checked as well, and Mary and Ian were both positive.

The difference since we cut out gluten in all three of them is amazing. We've been having some real behaviour problems with Mary, and ended up getting an ADD diagnosis, but since we went gf, she's a changed person. She's still a daydreamer, but she can concentrate in school, and she doesn't have the bizarre meltdowns that we used to struggle with. Ian's always had stomach problems, and last year *he* was diagnosed with GERD and given a VERY EXPENSIVE prescription for acid reflux, which he hasn't had to refill since a month after going GF.

It's been hard, but I'm getting the swing of it now. It's hardest on Ian, the girls haven't had 40 years of eating real bread to compare against the terrible stuff that is GF bread. They're both eating better now, they know that we can't just be a noodle and bread family anymore, so I've finally got Mary eating veggies!
