This might be the first time I've bought something just for the buttons. At a dollar for the suit, I reasoned the buttons alone would cost more, and...well, look at them.
I stopped at Earl May garden center for some chard and rocket seeds. They had this fellow guarding the place. Must be October in America...or do you say, Rocktober?
"Well he doesn't frighten me. Looks a bit like you, first thing in the morning...Mother."
Yes well, there's a resemblance if you look closely.

If I had a bottle of YSL Opium, I'd have worn it. Thankfully, I don't.
We bought Danny a phonograph so he could play this set of old 78's of Birdsongs recorded by Cornell University back in the stone age. Yeah. I think there's a headphone jack-I'm going to go look for it.
See you guys on the flip side. I had to explain how you flip a record . These damn kids don't know anything!

Quite right to rescue those cinnabar buttons -- and get a wearable jacket into the bargain! Red is definitely your color!
If Danny is inspired to research old recordings of sound oddities, you might direct him to the work of the Gennett Recording Studios. At the turn of the last century, the Gennett family of Richmond, Indiana (birthplace of recorded jazz) sent out the great-grandmother of sound trucks to record everyone from Civil War soldiers to Esquimaux to buffalo. Fascinating stuff!
Wearing those Autumnal hues gorgeously (as usual!)
We will be planting kohlrabi, daikon radishes, collards, and turnips this afternoon.
Aren't Estee Lauder lippies the greatest?
I'm not sure why but I can't stand YSL's Opium or Dana's Tabu but I love Maja. Well, at least Maja's current soap & dusting powder-the perfume has been reformulated to some bland mess. I certainly stocked up on Maja soap & powder at the Walmart in Miami- cheap as chips & lovely to scent one's person, bedsheets, & lingerie drawer.
Several kinds of mustard greens, collards, chard, lacinato and dwarf blue kale, carrots, beets, radishes (French breakfast, icicle, Easter egg, Spanish black), daikon, peas, and probably some short-day onions here. Favas and buckwheat to cover-cropa few places.
Opium gives me a bad headache. Tried and liked a sample of Thierry Mugler's "Alien" this week -- am waiting another month to take advantage of Sephora coupons.
@Beth Waltz
Thanks for the info-I think Danny would be fascinated by it. He's been digging through my dad's old 78's and found some Yiddish music from the 30's. The phonograph we bought can make recordings, so hopefully I will find some time to get them up on the Internet.
My mother always dressed me in red as a child, and it took me years before I would willingly wear it.
@Bibi
I have a small bottle of Vintage Maja I bought at Beth Waltz' suggestion, and I love it. I can't believe I missed it all these years. Know what I like about Lauder cosmetics? The packaging is well made. The cap won't fall off in my purse and mark everything up like some of the cheaper brands.
I like a little daikon radish in soup, but can't imagine using enough to grow it. Do you do anything interesting with it?
@Propagatrix
Favas. Gosh, I love favas. Wouldn't work in my garden though, so I'lll just have to be jealous.
There are a dozen or so Alien flankers now, so be sure you order the right one. I rather like the name, "Taste of Alien" because it sounds so Burroughs-esque.
Goody,
Kashmiri's do 3 things with daikon radishes-
Pickle slices of them in the Indian manner (achar) with mustard oil, salt, turmeric, ajwain/carom, Kashmiri mirch, ginger, garlic. mustard seeds, fennel seeds, & a bit of vinegar which is left to marinate in a glass or clay crock for 10 days,
Make a fried chutney out of them- basically grated daikon, onions, chopped cilantro, & green chilis that are salted & fried until tender then a hefty dollop of Kashmiri mirch (a special chili powder that tastes like a mix of paprika & cayenne) is stirred in & fried for 2 more minutes.
Make a fresh chutney out of them- pounded daikon, grated onion, chopped green chilis, chopped cilantro,
& salt are mixed with a little yoghurt & a bit of kashmiri mirch.
I have to say that these Kashmiri daikon recipes are HOTTER THAN HELL (and I love spicy hot food) & will clear your sinuses & possibly your bowels also even in small amounts.
@Bibi
The pickled daikon recipe sounds like the sort of thing Mr. ETB would like. I might have to try making some. Thank you.
What a spanking button!! Buttons are very important. There used to be a store in NY called Tender Buttons and it was just filled with boxes and boxes of unusual buttons, some of them very expensive. I spent many a rainy day wandering around in there. I wonder if it still exists?Where was I? Oh yeah, your outfit. I'm going to go out on a russet colored limb here and say that I think Autumn is your best season. The styles and the colors are perfect for you. You are your very own September Issue! My son Izzy came home from college last year and asked if he could have our old record collection. My husband went to college in the 60's so you can imagine the gems we have collecting dust in the garage. Izzy also saved his money and bought an old turn table. The times they are a changin'!
Come to SF and I will take you to Britex Fabrics. They have multiple floors of goodness, including a lovely button department.
@Connie
Isn't it fun watching the kids discover old vinyl?
You reminded me of the Windsor Button Shop. Gosh, I haven't thought about that in decades.
@Connie
I would LOVE to come to SF (with flowers in my hair and everything).
