Don't Be Chicken...Unless You're Headed to Wayne, NE.

 No one needs a rubber chicken purse, but I can at least attempt the argument as the Wayne Chicken Show is coming up.  Danny will be competing in the Cluck-Off for the second year (he took 3rd place last year) and I'm tempted to enter the, "Chicken Legs" competition. Anyway, I saw this bag and thought, "Gee, that would be great for the Chicken Show." As for the recently purchased vintage taxidermied armadillo purse I bought off eBay...no, I haven't any excuse for that one. You know how it is, you see a taxidermied armadillo purse and think, "Ewww, why would anyone...?" and the next thing you know you hit the, "Buy it now" button.  We've all done that, right?

Right?
Here's an impossible-to-photograph skirt. It looks just as bright in person as it does in the photos. My first impulse was to wear it with my gold lame pleated-sleeve blouse-but I was afraid I might blind someone(it was sunny today). I find it challenging to dress-down a fancy skirt, but I thought the addition of a slouchy cotton blouse and leather sandals might work. This wasn't my first attempt-black, white, even a wine coloured top were all tried before I settled on the gold blouse. Most mornings I don't need to work this hard getting dressed. Still, in the end i liked the overall effect, and perhaps in the dead of winter I'll try it with the gold top, or a velvet tunic. The skirt is 3 sizes too large and hangs on my hips, but I like the casual look that gives it.

If you will are local and plan to attend the Chicken Show, drop me an email and we can hang-out together. There's also a large flea market in town the same weekend that I'm told is worth going to. There are a few thrift stores in town along the parade route as well. Should be a good time. Now, to find an appropriate event for an armadillo purse...haven't been to Oklahoma in a few years...

That handbag is perfect for the Chicken Show. What is the Cluck Off which Danny is entering again? I looked at the website but still can't figure it out! JanF

That ensemble looks rather like traditional Thai dress. (Except for the chicken purse.) Everybody needs a chicken purse!
My parents used to drive to Mexico every Winter in the 70's & buy an entire VW bus full of armadillo purses, leather fringed jackets, leather hats, & stuff. Then they'd sell them at fairs & festivals in the Summer in California.
Good luck at the Cluck-off!

@Jan
You have to cluck and act like a chicken for 15 seconds on stage. Top prize is $400.

@Bibi
I think I should just buy a retirement property in Mexico and get it over with. I have to grow old somewhere-why not Guadalajara?

I do not have the words for the love I have for that purse.

Everyone needs a chicken bag, I know I do! That's a fabulous find and the skirt is bloody gorgeous. xxx

Oooooooh, chicken handbag! Everyone needs one of those, surely. If they say they don't, I reckon they must be lying.

Not sure about the armadillo one though ... my friend had a coin purse made from a frog once. It gave me the creeps as I'm very much scared of frogs but it was more to do with the fact that she was basically carrying around the outside of a frog and it was all dried up and wrinkled.

I say temporarily blind someone and wear the skirt with the top. But then I have no problems with dazzling people with my facet cut vintage jewellery!

$400 is sufficient reason to cluck and act like a chicken on stage for 15 seconds -- this works out to $1200/hour. And I agree with Bibi, your ensemble would dazzle the locals at a high-end Thai buffet restaurant (excepting the chicken bag, but they might be intrigued by the armadillo).

Ooooh, coveting the chicken and armadillo bags. I have a lovely crocodile bag whose closing flap is made of the alligator's head. You would adore it.

I will be on the lookout for a chicken purse now, but I'l draw the line at a taxidermied armadillo purse. Wouldn't mind seeing yours, though. The yellow slouchy blouse looks great with the skirt and makes it look quite summery. Had a look at the chicken show website, what a fun event. I bet Danny is already practising his clucking routine? xxx

Yup! I concur with Bibi, that's a Thai skirt.

Looking forward to the chicken festival.
Hope the Chickendales are performing!!!

Gawd I love those glasses!!! Thanks for the back story on them.

Happy clucking, er thrifting ;)

Edit: $1,600/hour less the IRS cut, which they've taken from the 4-H kiddos before they even leave the tent. (So very educational.)

@Miss Magpie
I'll leave it to you in my will ;)

@Vix
It does make for awkward conversations such as, "Can you grab my phone? I left it in the chicken."

@Melanie
I've seen those frog change purses! I thought about getting one for Danny (he has all kinds of moths and bugs mounted on foam around the house).

@Beth
I wonder how it ended up in Omaha? We don't have a sizable Thai population that I'm aware of.

@Propagatrix
You're right-I would adore it-maybe it can be a future post. I'd love to get my hands on a pair of shoes with the baby alligator head on the toes. They're super-$$$ but if I found a pair in my size I might be unable to resist.

@Thrifty Parka
The Chickendales were amazing-picture middle aged men with huge beer guts dancing on a float. Easily, the best part of the weekend. There's a quilt show too-with the nicest church ladies strong-arming you into buying raffle tickets. Hard to say no!

@Beth
Yep, gotta give Uncle Sam his cut.
I wonder what the people at our small bank thought when he deposited the check last year that had. 3rd Place Cluck-Off in the memo line? No one has said anything, but I suspect they don't want to brag about a brush-with-fame.

That chicken bag is ace. I'd worry about leaving it to Gisela in your will though - don't take any clifftop walks with her anytime soon.

I thought the skirt looked Asian too, though I admit I'm rubbish at telling the differences between the different ones.

Totally in love with the Chicken bag!!!!!!!! OMG you have the best stuff.

Nearly missed this post...

Oh my god a chicken purse - where are the limits of the human imagination? As for the taxidermy armadillo bag I just have no words.

I love the skirt. It does look like a Thai skirt to me and I have always loved the female traditional Thai costume. I think the gold blouse looks perfect with it.

Another thing you might consider is a denim shirt; I don't think there's a garment in the world a denim shirt doesn't suit. I even managed to make an 'impossible to pair' bronze, micro pleated skirt look reasonably ok with a denim shirt, but promptly re donated the skirt. I bought it in 1999 for a Millenium New Year's Eve dance and wore it three times in 16 years!

That purse is a hoot!
Sorry, couldn't stop my fingers typing that.
I initially thought the skirt might be Indonesian, but a quick google image search tells me that, to the non-expert eye, there is not an obvious way to distinguish between Thai and Indonesian brocade, though the latter is apparently called Songket. Your outfit is wonderful, I'd never have thought of golden yellow and it goes so beautifully well. I love all your massive jewellery.

@Veronica
Ooops-I missed your comment! Sorry about that. I like the denim shirt suggestion very much.

@Radostin
I can now add Songket to my fashion vocabulary. Thank you!
