The Elusive Boden and an Effie's Heart

* This is another post from earlier in the spring that I forgot to publish. Better late than never!

I wear this dress more than just about anything in my summer wardrobe, yet somehow I never manage to get photos of it. I wasn't about to let it slip through yet again, so we stopped in front of Hand-Me-Ups for a quick photo. Not the best photo, but beggars can't be choosers. It was the end of a very warm day.

Yes, the dress is ill-fitting, and the top needs to be held shut with a brooch. The Empire waist makes me look pregnant, and the length is dowdy...but I love it. I mean, seriously love it. Cool, comfortable, fully lined in a non-clinging cotton-Boden might have a reputation for being a bit middle class, but they do make nice clothes. The zipper works. That shouldn't be noteworthy, but with the way clothes are made today, it is. The print is just beautiful./ The top doesn't absolutely need pinning, but I'd feel funny wearing it without. I don't think that's a fault of the dress, just me not wanting to go flopping out all across Omaha.

Vintage purse-Goodwill
Vintage blue and orange clampers-both Thrift World
Silver and orange clamper bracelet-Hand-Me-Ups
Earrings-Thrift World
Fragrance-Fragile (something about iris and ginger feels right on a muggy day)

So what's in the bag from Hand-Me-Ups? A Vera tablecloth. I haven't decided if it will remain a tablecloth or become a skirt. There's enough there for a shift dress or a playsuit., Decisions, decisions. Anyway, I'm just thrilled to finally get a photograph of one of my favourite dresses.

Now, to Effie, or in this case, Effin.
 I was suckered in by the cute button details on the front and sleeves. I know shirts made of cotton jersey don't work for me but..,.cute buttons. When will I learn? Still, let's talk about the positives. As already mentioned, the buttons are a nice touch. Decent sized pockets, cute print, easy care. Would I pay the $100.00 USD this retails for? Absolutely not (it is a bloody tee shirt for heaven's sake!) but the .49 cents dug out of my purse to buy it at Goodwill was probably a deal. I plan to remove the buttons an make a skirt out of the bottom half. The waist hits me wrong, and a tight belt wouldn't work, nor would a loose one. At that point, I admit defeat and get out the sewing shears. I do really like the print-and the buttons.
 "Hey lady, nice buttons on that dress."

 We stopped by the park to see how things were after the severe storms we've been having. Most of the blooms are off the trees, and there's deep crevices in the path where the water runs downhill, but otherwise it seemed to fare okay.

The college next door has a small community garden. I love to see their progress with it (it varies year-to-year with the students).
One of those raised wooden planters has carrots growing! What a novel way to do that. I've never successfully grown carrots, so that's something to consider for next year. Personally, with all the bunnies in the park, I'd put up a fence-but that's me. I did see a pair of birds sitting on the cornstalks...waiting. Birds and bunnies ain't stupid-they know where to find food.
Danny tells me this is a firefly, out in the daytime. Who knew? Well, he did, obviously.

*Update-here's the tablecloth in use.

I can't promise it will remain a tablecloth, but it does look nice on the table.

Have a great weekend!

Never argue with the kid when the kid knows his stuff!! Just noticed your front door mat with all the birds on, pretty cool. So by the way are your summery frocks, it is pouring with rain as I type and my nose is starting to dribble. I have no time or patience for a cold so I shall be making a hot lemon and honey drink very soon.

That blue & orange print is sooo gorgeously summery & cool looking. No wonder you love it!

Tell Danny the fireflies glow orange here in Nepal- It seriously looks like someone smoking a cigarette in the dark when they're about!

That Vera tablecloth is so divinely 70's earth tones! Harvest gold, avocado green, burnt orange, and of course brown, brown & more brown! Actually that orange looks more to be of the brilliant persimmon shade that was popular too.

Versace made some great perfume in the 90's. I have White Jeans & Blonde which are tuberoses with some seriously Italian bombast! Quite the switch from the watery monotony Versace makes today like Bright Crystal & Bright Diamonds.

Ooooh, a Vera with the ladybug! This means you've snapped up the nicest 30-year-old tablecloth in town. Frau Neuman's colors and designs are like nice bouquets, there's always something more to examine.

The Boden frock has a Scandinavian summer flair. Doesn't that fabulous print remind you of Marimekko? Very wearable, indeed!
The Effie, however, would never have made it into my wardrobe, buttons and print notwithstanding. Those dinky belts with the string loops never match up with the waistband, the loops snag and rip, grrrr...

Wow- 49 c for such a great dress. Our local Goodwill has $1.79 for a particular color tag on Mondays, that's as cheap as it goes. JanF

Couldn't you put a couple of stitches in the top of that dress instead of wearing a pin? JanF

That tablecloth is gorgeous, what a find! I do like the boden too, great colour scheme and sounds like the perfect summer dress to wear. If I was making that second dress in to a skirt, I'd be tempted to get a tshirt out of the top, too. If a waistband is desired for the skirt, it can always be made of some other fabric. The colour really suits you. I have also been swayed by such details as print or buttons in a garment that isn't really quite right.

@Sue
Put a splash of whisky in it! I hope you're feeling better soon.
Danny bought the mat-but you probably guessed that.

@Bibi
Orange fireflies must be quite the sight.
I really should explore some of the older fragrances in the "jeans" line. I wasn't interested in them at the time.

@Sue
I wouldn't have put it together, but yes, it does remind me of Merimekko.

@Jan
Yeah, we live in the best region for thrift shopping. I could stitch it, but if I use a brooch it is easily adjustable.

@Radostin
I'd have to lengthen the bottom of the shirt with something or it would be a crop-top. And no. Just, no ;)

I'm not surprised that Boden dress is a favourite: that is such a fab print and it looks fab on you too! I quite like the print of the Effie too, but I hear you on the cotton jersey. They don't work on me either, but I can kind of understand you picking it up at that price if only for the buttons. Does it really retail at $ 100,-? That is preposterous! The tablecloth is divine, I'd keep it as it is, although I'm sure it would make a great skirt ... xxx

That is an ace tablecloth.

I have to pin my Boden wrap dress too; I don't think they cut for fulsome funbags. That said, I *do* like Boden, and I don't care how middle-class their reputation is - I have dresses from there with decent linings and lingerie loops in the shoulders to clip my bra under the straps, and so few other brands in my price bracket do things like that, I'll live with the Yummy Mummy associations. And every so often they do a blinder of a print; your dress is really nice.

@Ann
People will spend absurd amounts of money on things with a designer label-even a tee shirt, Madness.

@Mim
I should also confess to liking Boden cardigans *hangs head*.

Boden do some lovely prints and that dress is a cracker. I've been searching for their Vivienne trouser suit for ages, I'll probably be 90 by the time it turns up in a chazza.
I don't get on with jersey either but the print is pretty. xxx
