Some Gourmet Magazine Covers

 Since everyone seemed to enjoy the last recipe, I went through the archives and dug out some photos of Gourmet Covers to share.

I'm presently on day four of the cold from hell (not covid) that was just sniffles for Dan but is kicking my behind and everything else. I'm actually staying in bed-because I can't keep upright longer than it takes to get to the toilet. This is why I've been so afraid of catching covid, or flu, or anything else. No idea how this slipped through the masks we all wear, but it did. After two years of not being sick with anything viral I'm also reminded just how awful colds can be. I feel like every tooth in my head is about to fall out. We have a snowstorm coming tonight, but it will be in the 60s (F) in a few days so not much to concern ourselves with there. Dan has a four-day break from school so he can stay home and watch the snowflakes fall. He'll probably sleep through it.

I'm going to revisit some of the recipes as well. I have one for beans that I made last week (upcoming post) that might be enjoyable.

I love old magazine covers, and even more, the ads inside! WTF, that platter of...green and yellow beans?? Why would you ever serve them like that?

Ugh, snow! Ours is done for the year (famous last words), and all the trees are full of pink blossoms. Sending you some mild temps, Goody, and good vibes for your cold to end soon.

I haven't been sick in over 2 years - I will be continuing to wear masks when it's flu season here or when I'm sick, long after the pandemic becomes endemic. It's proven that they work.

@Sheila
those "beans" are candied citrus peels! Still strange, but way less strange than beans.

I hope you feel better soon! Lucky Dan, staying home for four days to enjoy the snow.

The other day, when you posted your recipe and tagged it, I followed one of the tags to see a whole slew of other recipes you found in "Gourmet." I was enchanted by the recipe for banana cake with penuche frosting, and since I have all the ingredients on hand, I'll be making it this week. I've never made penuche before, so I'm really stoked.

Gah! That raised pie, I used to be a master of those things back in my chef days, doesn't it look dreadfully old fashioned now? xxx

Those are great covers. There's something lovely about seeing a different decade's take on 'aspirational'.

I hope the cold eases up soon.

These covers are so evocative! Like Sheila, I was intrigued by the beans, which you've explained are candied citrus peel. Still weird, whatever they are! xxx

get well soon - dear goody!
at least the snow will provide a good dose of water for the garden and nature..... here its bone dry since weeks.
the covers are gorgeous - love that aesthetics - esp. the snowy photo and the venetian chandelier.....i could swear its the one in in the palazzo ca´rezzonico - photographed it when i was there. (http://bahnwaerterhaeuschen.blogspot.com/2014/06/museumstag-in-venedig.html)
the recipes will be very welcome here!

Thanks for explaining the basket tiers of dried citrus peel. I, too, was baffled by the "beans".

That glorious Venetian chandelier! That cover rings a crystal *ping* because I recall being chided for "gawking like a tourist" at a similar lighting fixture in a Chicago restaurant (so long ago there was a dessert cart being wheeled about).

Sorry you're laid low by a bug. Wish I could deliver a steaming pot of ginger-lemon tea to your bedside table, suitable for drinking or inhaling.

Such interesting covers! I looked at your chicken curry with prunes recipe and it sounds delicious. I'm always a little confused by the USA use of cups - I find the equivalent weights in grammes/oz can vary so much depending upon who you ask and it varies with the ingredients used, too!

Hope you get over the cold, soon. It sounds awful

@Beate
Yes, that's it!
There's a bit of a travel article with some recipes and lovely photos as well. I'd like to send you the magazine.

Might be a while before I get out to the post office, but it will get there eventually. Something to read in the summer :)

@Emily
Be sure to pour any extra frosting into a pan and cut it into squares like fudge. It holds up really well in the fridge.

@Vix
I made a gala pie once. After attempting to position the eggs *just so* I came to accept it just isn't my thing! I'm impressed by anyone that can make a hot water pastry.

@Mim
I guess that would have been classy to Americans at the time.
Hope you're feeling better soon too. And Pete.

@Ann
I used to love candied peel. There's something so satisfying about eating what would have otherwise been discarded. The display is a bit on the strange side, admitted.

@Beth Waltz
There was a suburban Chicago restaurant called The Chandelier (give you a guess why). Wonder if that was the place? All I remember from it was a giant, and I mean giant glass pedestal filled with hard candy on display at the front. Obviously never intended for consumption encased in glass, but fascinating to children waiting to be seated.
Are dessert carts a thing of the past?! I haven't been anywhere fancy in a couple decades, but I'm sorry to hear that.

@Vronni
Our American measuring system is completely fucked, pardon my bluntness! It is okay for general recipes because it won't matter if you're off a bit, but in baking it is a nightmare. It definitely makes a difference between dry measure cups and liquid cups. Weighing things makes so much better sense.
This is a pretty good site:

Love your blog. My Mother subscribed to Gourmet when I was growing up. I used to read them over and over again. We still have recipes I typed up from the magazine for Mom (of course, we couldn't cut them up). A family friend who was in the university's faculty "Gourmet" club with my Mom wallpapered her kitchen with photos from Gourmet Magazine. It was marvelous.

Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane.

wow, I'm another huge fan of old magazine covers, some of them are works of art!. Totally enjoyable reading, I have some of my mom's old magazines, particularly those about crochet&knit and crafts. It doesn't cease to amaze me the professional-level skills required to complete any of those projects, some of them are Impossible!
Hope you feel better soon!. Sorry that the usual colds are back, so annoying. I'd almost forgotten them!
