Blue Hawaiian

We had a terrific storm last evening. Around 11:00 PM, I heard the thunder at the same moment at the lightening flashed, and a loud cracking noise outside the bedroom window. Upon inspection in the morning I found the gardenia toppled over, but thankfully unharmed and a large branch of the tree in back struck by lightening. If there hadn't been torrential downpours at the same time, the house could well have caught fire.
That was a large branch, but the main part of the tree appears unharmed. It is heavy enough that I wouldn't let Danny run around beneath it for fear of him being klunked on the noggin. Considering the force of the storm we were lucky that's all we had. Some parts of the city lost power for the second night in a row. We had such an easy spring, the severe weather is catching us off guard. There was a tornado Saturday night in the southeastern part of the state. Anyway, the sun came out this morning to cheer everyone, and if cleaning up after a storm and Monday morning aren't enough reasons to appreciate sunshine I don't know what are.
Know what would cheer me this summer Monday? A Blue Hawaiian. No, I don't have any curacao in the house (who keeps that on hand?) so I'll just have to make due with a blue Hawaiian dress. Oh the suffering I must endure.

I'm still experimenting with trousers. I've owned this pair a couple decades, and I still can't find anything to go with them! They're a sort of brownish grey seersucker. I do keep hope that somewhere there exists a pair of trousers that will fit the way I'd like, and be in a reasonable colour. I'm starting to think the only way that will happen is if I make them myself. I hope not, I hate sewing trousers.

Outfit Particulars:
Perry Ellis men's seersucker trousers (90's) Marshall Field's
Top-K Mart
California Originals animal skin (gator, I think) handbag-Hand-Me-Ups
Shoes-Attention K Mart ("Attention K Mart Shoppers!")
Onyx clamper bracelet-gift from my sister, 70's -Carson Pirie Scott (she worked there)
Fragrance-Reformulated Guerlain Jicky. I've completely come around on this one-I like the synthetic civet after about 30 minutes. Go figure.

Do I really need curacao to make a Blue Hawaiian? What would happen if I just stuck blue food colouring and orange extract in vodka? Eh? Maybe? I'll let you know how it goes.

  1. Oh that dress is fabulous. Very Connie Francis. I actually have Blue CuraƧao in my house. I don't know how it got there. Some long ago wild party no doubt. If you find a good pants pattern, let me know. I'm in a trouser funk myself.

  3. Dreams come true.......in blue Hawaiiiiiii!!!!!
    And that dress is definitely dreamy.
    An average of 160 people in Nepal die yearly from lightning strikes. Poured & thunderboomered all last night & felt a M5.9 earthquake epicentered near Bumfuk, Afghanistan yesterday at 3:35 pm - no damage reported. (Bumfuk, Ishkabibble whateveahhh somewhere around the Khyber pass).
    Supposedly if we mix blue curacao, grenadine, 7-up & vodka we get 'Purple Rain'. I have grenadine & a lovely popular Indian spicy rose syrup called Roos Afza. Perhaps we could make a 'Bhangani Varsha' (Hindi for purple rain)? Meet ya at Connie's!

  4. You do get some extreme weather. Every time it rains at night I ask for thunder and lightening, but does it come? No! You suit blue, Hawaiian of course.

  5. Oh my goodness, be careful out there, we don't want anyone struck by lightning or injured by falling trees.
    On the plus side, that dress is divine! I confess to be more than a little envious... But since you look so gorgeous in it, you may keep it. You're welcome. Rock-a-hula!
    I quite like making trousers, why don't you give it a go? I can see you looking fabulous in some wide legs/flares. xxx

  6. That dress, that bag, those bangles -- Dorothy Lamour couldn't haven't worn it better if Edith Head had stitched on her body! (And you actually have real coconuts to fill it out.) Now you really must hie thee to YouTube to watch the kane competition. Those male hula dancers will inspire you to create a drink deserving an umbrella -- somewhere there's a weird concoction involving Tang, it wasn't awful and Danny might find its history interesting.

  7. Oooh, that dress is a smasher. I really like the print.

    You do get such dreadful storms where you are. We get the odd bit of flooding/gale, but nothing like you do. I'm glad your house was okay.

    Ishkabible! I thought it was just my family that used the old vaudvillian's name in vain.

    @Sue
    Yeah, our weather is nuts-I don't know why we stay here, especially after having our house hit by a tornado. Just too lazy to move, I guess.

    @Curtise
    I think you're a better sewist than I am. Your trousers always have legs the same length. I'm not sure I could manage.

    @Beth Waltz
    Coconuts...tang...getting pretty racy around here!

    @Mim
    Thank you. I always worry about prints like this as they can get distorted over my boobs and behind. Fortunately, the designer took that into consideration when making the dress.
