The cake is a sort of lemon pound cake, but it is filled with buttercream, and glazed with a honey-lemon mixture before being coated in royal icing and buttercream bees. As I had candied flowers, I added them since bees adore violets and borage.
So that's this year's beehive cake sorted.
I miss my apricot coloured quilted bedspread, and matching curtains. There was a canopy bed without a canopy as well because my parents couldn't be bothered to finish the decorating. You know how it is, you think about doing something and then life gets in the way. Just as well really, I had terrible allergies as a child and I can't think a dusty piece of fabric over the bed would help.
Bag and shoes time! Shoes first. I found these brand-new, never worn vintage Larks at Goodwill. These are not my style-at all. I bought them anyway figuring if I live into my 80's they might be just the sort of thing I'll be looking for, and unable to find. Some people plan for their retirement buying stocks and bonds-I go for shoes. If they don't scream, "Miami Beach" I don't know what does. Now, the handbag is a funny little number look closely at the floral design...
Whoa! How'd she do that?! Reversible purse, kids! Two-fer.

I'm posing in the parking lot because the bees were finding me irresistible. I probably smelled of honey after baking the cake.
Strike a 60's pose now...
"It has a good beat, and I can dance to it, I'll give it a 5."
Have a great weekend.
That beautiful cake is filled with buttercream? Oh my. I Loooooove buttercream. I live for buttercream. Cake is just a vessel for buttercream. OK. I've recovered just enough to tell you how much I love your Nana shoes. I actually think my Nana had those exact same shoes. And....I just had to go check out CB I Hate Perfume. What???? This guy sounds like a genius. Wherever did you discover it? I'm on the hunt for a store that carries it. Gosh I wish we had smelloblog so I could get a whiff of your M. Hulot. Goodie, you are always so full of such wonderful information and inspiration to fire my imagination. XXOO
ReplyDelete@Connie
ReplyDeleteThank you-the cake was work, but worth it. The pan is interesting-two parts on the same pan. After baking you stand the halves on edge, trim the inward-facing part, then affix them together with the buttercream. The icing covers the seam, and gives something to stick the bees on.
You can get most of those oddball perfumes in decants at Surrendertochance.com. Hulot is an aquatic with a sort of vague fruit note. It is pleasant, but nothing I'd want a large, expensive bottle of. They had one called, "Old Fur Coat" that I'm told really did smell of old fur, stale tobacco and mothballs. I'm sorry I missed that one!
I have to ask, did you have pink shag carpeting to go with that wallpaper or chartreuse?
ReplyDeleteLove the bag & shoes.
I think those shoes are more Ft Lauderdale or Boca Raton. The Miami Beach ladies are all trying to look like Kim Kardashian these days (surprisingly regardless of age).
@Bibi
ReplyDeletePink, of course!
I haven't been to Miami since the late 70's, so I admit to being a touch out of the times. Kim K, huh? That's sad.
Now I'm craving those green apple hard candies filled with honey, which we used to get at the Wauconda apple orchard.
ReplyDeleteAlso, those shoes are divine.
@Propagatrix
ReplyDeleteI hate to break it to you, but the orchard is now a subdivision. We never had the candy, but that does sound good. Sometimes we bought apple butter that my mother rationed by the teaspoon.
That cake looks delicious - how big is a slice?!
ReplyDeleteExcellent dress. It looks very natty with the hat. Was it another one of your bargain buys?
@Mim
ReplyDeleteI cut the slices in small wedges, but if you were to cut cross-ways, you could probably get 8-10 1 inch thick slices. We still have more than half the cake. Being rich, a little goes a long way.
I've had the hat for a few years-I think it was inexpensive (around 5 USD).
OMG your cake is AMAZING!! You win, you make the best ever looking cakes.
ReplyDeleteOh no, that delicious looking cake has me salivating on the keyboard. I must go find cake!!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the outfit! The shoes, the dress, the hat the handbag! I am definitely going to talk to my financial advisor guy about flipping my portfolio into SHOES!! That is a brilliant idea! After all, the price of gold and oil may rise and fall, but my little hooves will always shoes!
happy thrifting ;)
