We went to the tree lighting party at the Nebraska State capitol.
There were children singing...
...and silent protesters during the Governor's speech who just as quietly slipped away once he was done, point made, and let the children continue singing.
Most of the building was closed off as it was Sunday, and only open for the tree lighting event. I hope to make a return visit during the week to show you all the wonderful Art Deco mosaics and paintings in the building. Where the Iowa's capitol building is Neo-Classical, our is all 20's/30's details and worthy of a detailed post. It is a dark building, though this hallway is well lit as it overlooks the courtyard and fountain.

Oh my! You look like Fanny Cradock dressed as Mrs Claus! (And I mean that in the most fabulous way.)
ReplyDeleteBoucheron's PV is just what I'd think Mrs Claus would wear too!
Whatever do raspberries have to do with Columbia?
That is one crazy skirt and you're wearing it fabulously. Is that a pom-pom trim?
ReplyDeleteThe capitol building is wonderful, I'm looking forward to seeing more of it.
Yay to the peaceful protest. xxx
Now there's an interesting mind-game: What fragrance would [insert name, e.g. Nancy Reagan] wear? Does Boucheron's PV evoke fireplace smoke and piney woods?
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to a tour of this magnificent public building! Indiana excelled in the destruction/reconstruction fad of the 60s and we've lots of boring boxes cluttering our high streets.
@Bibi
ReplyDeleteFanny Craddock! Anyone for a mincemeat omelette? How that woman never set herself alight cooking in those gowns with massive sleeves is beyond me. My initial reaction as an American kid seeing her on television for the first time?
"Is this a Monty Python skit or something?"
@Vix
Yep-complete with pom poms. I was pleased there wasn't any shouting at the protesters from the crowd. It was all very respectful.
@Beth
Boucheron Place Vendome is very sweet-like candy floss/cotton candy with honey poured atop it. I only wear it when I know I'll be in a crowd or seated close to others as it is inoffensive, sweet but subtle, and not terribly, "perfume-y". It isn't a favourite of mine (Though Danny loves it) but in social situations it is my best option-except in the heat of summer when it would be suffocating. Then, I go for 4711.
There's an old joke about Government Center in Boston:
"It looks like the box Faneuil Hall came in." I sort of appreciate the Brutalist architecture now.
My goodness - what a completely bonkers skirt! But I love how you've paired it with the fab blouse and furry headband - brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI thought the silent protest was wonderful - as you say they made their point and didn't disrupt the children's singing either; how very respectful.
I await your post on the building with great interest.
Thank you for your info re the perfume - 'powdery smell' encapsulated perfectly what I meant and now I know!
Have a great weekend
What a crazy skirt! Of course you had to wear it. It's actually looking quite fab with the blouse and headband. At first, I even thought it was a dress! Love the respectful silent protest. xxx
ReplyDelete@Veronica
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting how the television station and newspapers never mentioned the protest-seems like a serious omission.
@Ann
When I bought the skirt I wasn't sure it would fit, but there was no way I could leave it. I just *barely* squeezed into it. Barely.
I don't know what I like more: the idea of the art deco capitol, or that delicious-sounding cocktail!
ReplyDeleteFab skirt there. It certainly does look festive.
