I had another post ready for today but pictures of outfits and complaining about the cold felt somewhat inappropriate after...well, yeah. I'll keep this brief.
By the way, we all saw what we saw. It wasn't an awkward mistake (twice) and they're trying to spin it, but you know what you saw. That wasn't AI-it was live television around the world. They're going to memory hole everything now and call it fake. You saw that, and so did I.
Word today that Facebook was blocking use of words like, Democrat. I haven't fact checked that, but I'd already more or less made up my mind.
And on that note, I deleted Facebook and Instagram. Years worth of photos I'll never look at again anyway. I don't need social media to have memories. I can't do anything about misinformation but I also don't need to be part of keeping it alive. They make it sound like somehow people never kept in touch before social media. The absurdity, that you need them to keep your social connections intact. Friends? 99% of my "Friends" weren't people I knew or interacted with and were likely bots and scams. I spent more time blocking and deleting than it was worth. They give you nothing. You give them everything. We are the product. Anyway, I had enough. Thankfully Tumblr is such a joke of a site that hasn't had any support for years and more or less operates in a feral manner because no one has managed to make a profit from it. If they sell it again, and that changes, I might need to go. Same thing here. I have no idea how long the poor neglected blogger will continue but as it makes no money for Google, I suspect it is in the death throes.
Speaking of keeping in touch-I had an email from someone I hadn't seen/heard from in 20 years this week. If they could find me, surely it isn't that hard?
Anyway, it has been over 24 hours and we aren't in a war yet, so I guess there's that. USA friends, look after our vulnerable ones because they need us more than ever.

Thank you, Goody, for writing this-I really needed to read this tonight-yesterday & today have me so depressed! I agree with your opinion of Facebook & instagram- I quit Facebook long ago. There are a very few people on instagram that I follow, mostly sewists, & quilters, everyone else seems to be selling something. On Monday, I started a monthly donation to ACLU, & canceled my Washington Post subscription. I will stick with the NYT. I enjoy, and agree with, you everything you write. Please keep writing your blog! Kathy in Maryland
Ugh, I wish we had some major business moguls in social media and e-commerce who aren't in bed with Trump. Is that so much to ask?
I commend you for having the nerve to leave Facebook and Instagram. May Blogspot and Tumblr continue to be safe havens for left-wing and moderate people who just want to do their own thing.
Emily
i really hope that blogger will stay alive - if its only for your posts!!
i never used facebook, twitter, instagram or any other social media. who has a serious interest in me writes an email or a sms, calls me or sends a postcard...... for business it would be different though, thankfully for our holiday stay airb&b does all the media stuff.
we switch off the radio if something apears with T.... in it and try to ignore the artikles in our (digital) newspaper. an no, we are not naive, this clown will have a huge and bad impact on europe.
sending hugs and stay warm!!! xxxxx
The highlight on Facebook for me is The Poke, a British left-leaning satirical website which has me roaring with laughter whenever I get depressed about the state of the world. However, you don't need to be on social media to access it: https://www.thepoke.com/
If you can find the Danish MEP's response to the Big Orange Baby's ambitions for Greenland you'll be Googling "how to move to Europe". xxx
You are a braver person than me.watching the inauguration. I tuned out all news reporting of "that day." for my own sanity. Luckily my local public radio station which plays classical music had a good program honoring Martin Luther King on Monday. They recited his " I Have a Dream" speech which always inspires. I also canceled facebook and the Washington post a while back. I still have my NYT subscription. There are still a few honest down to earth blogs worth reading for thrift store fashion , interesting historic tours and home garment sewing . Other wise most social media is a waste time.

Kudos for writing this this post, Goody! I just had a conversation with my Mexican boss who's living in Miami, and he's considering moving to Belgium. Not that it's the land of milk and honey, mind you. In the aftermath of June's general election, they're still trying to form a coalition government ...
I can't bring myself to leave Facebook and Instagram, although I've been sorely tempted ... At least Blogger is still alive, and long may it continue, as blogging has been a lifeline for me lately. xxx
The ACLU feels like our last defenders, so thanks for making the donations-it will definitely help.
once they have money they tend to want to keep it, I guess.
It got so bad, I couldn't listen to our public radio, so now I'm listening to RFI. It is good to remember there's a big world out there and the focus isn't entirely on the US.
The Danes are the last fucking people I'd start shit with-they still haven't apologised about Ireland :)
Maybe the time has come for you to start a blog? I'd love to hear about your sewing/thrifting.
Your boss isn't the only one! Of the international graduate schools being applied to, two are in Belgium (one in Luxembourg, another in Iceland). The US has never appreciated what our Mexican immigrants bring to our country, and I don't blame him one bit.
