Weak Week

Wow, where did last week go? Sorry about that. I'm not the sort of person that gets laid-out by colds/flu but this one really did (and continues to) kick my ass. Don't worry, I won't cough on your computer screen.

Most of the last couple weeks remain a blur in my mind, but I snapped some photos here and there when I absolutely had to get dressed, and go out. Well, I didn't go out today, because Omaha had a tornado (see previous post). I don't understand storm-chasing. I mean, why would you want to go looking for a tornado?! Anyway, I did get dressed nicely today, but one look at the weather forecast made me re-think my plans for the day. I'm glad we stayed home. Still, no point wasting a perfectly nice outfit, so....

I'll give you a glimpse of some other interesting stuff I've worn recently but am too tired-out to write a post for. You'll forgive me, I hope. My brain just isn't working at capacity right now.

Modern shirt and skirt, vintage accessories.

More modern clothing with vintage accessories. All clothing, thrifted.

My inner-Hyacinth Bucket was screaming to be let out. head-to-toe 70's vintage. I'd say I'm dressed like my nan...but she dressed much better than this!

And that's about it for the week. I made it to the Spring Affair plant sale, but my heart wasn't in it this year. We bought a few herbs and flowers, but nothing terribly special. The garden does look good (after all this rain, it should!) but I've not really been able to get out there to do much.

Our holiday has been quiet, and house guest-free for which I'm quite grateful this year. I don't think I could have managed a big seder. We're eating lots of salads from the garden, and fish which limits the amount of cooking I need to do. I have enough sense to know when it is time to plant myself on the sofa in front of the television, and call it a day.

I'm going to need my rest because tomorrow I'm picking up 40 lbs. of apricots so Danny can do the yearly, "Apricot Olympiad". The first crop of California apricots are more expensive, but they're always nicer. We were able to negotiate a good price this year, so that was lucky. Danny's planning jam, preserves, apricot butter, apricot chutney, pickled apricots, and some other stuff I've forgotten. The best of the caning will be his State Fair entries in September, so there's quite a bit riding on getting good apricots. Anyway, that's our weekend plans. I'm getting tired just thinking about it, so I;d better go have a lie down. Between apricots, the flu, and a tornado I'm ready for a snooze.

I hope your week is going well.

  1. That's BOO-KAY dahling! What a delightful ensemble of intentional mauve hued frump that is.
    Coral looks so good on you, in both the peasant blouse & the 70's Spanish bag outfits.
    Oh I miss California apricots & nectarines. The apricots grown in my husband's native Kashmir are very flavorful but so thin fleshed they dry them whole with the pit inside.
    It's a very arid & smoky 95F today AGAIN!

  2. I'm sorry you've been ill, hope you regain your strength in time to pick apricots (I'd probably be eating more than i harvest).
    Love the hippy tunic in your modern ensemble and that fabulous Spanish bag in the first. You look far more fabulous than Hyacinth in your floral confection.
    I've only seen a tornado once and must admit I was transfixed. xxx

  3. Your first outfit is very spring-like, even if the weather said otherwise. I love that colourfully printed black skirt. But my favourite by far is your Hyacinth Bucket dress! Such lovely colours. In fact, I love everything about it. Come to think of it, I have a blouse in the same style, and with a similar print, but much paler in colour. I'll have to dig it out some day. xxx

  4. Coral really is a great colour on you. Keep taking things easy; flu is nasty.

    Good luck to Danny with his apricot canning. Has he set himself a target number of categories to enter, or is he just going to see how much he's able to produce from the apricots he's got?

  5. Sorry to read you've been "under the weather" -- and what weather it has been! Do take your supplements and drink lots of water: these germs are organized.

    Not that you're not well organized, yourself. Once again we admire the ease with which you combine floral patterns (Ensemble #1) and modern items with vintage treasures. Mme. Bucket it is, and one can imagine Patricia Routledge trilling "...where did you get THAT HAT."

  6. Flu is awful and can knock a person for six...I've had it twice in my life and felt rotten - even my eyeballs ached, I couldn't taste any of my food and it took at least a week to recover. I wish you a speedy recovery back to your usual self.

    A new TV series started this week on Channel 4 called 'The Flowers. The female lead part is played by Olivia Coleman - an excellent actress - but how she reminded of you in the way her character dresses! It's a rather weird but enjoyable programme - after only one episode it could go either way, but do check her clothes out - you'll love them. She wore 2 rather lovely tweedy capes and lots of brooches....

    I love all your outfits and that bag is gorgeous! Those bangles are so pretty in all those lovely pastel ice cream colours - what a fab collection you have.

    Hope your week improves...

  7. @Bibi
    The last few years the California apricots haven't been great-okay for canning, but eating out of hand, no. This year they're juicy and ripe and almost *too* nice to use for preserves.

    @Vix
    Thankfully, all I need to do is pick them up at the store. We can grow apricots in Nebraska, but the harvest is late summer/early fallo which would be too late for the fair.

    @Ann
    I also have a version in a light blue...could it be that we have the same outfit? That would be fun!

    @Mim
    Last year he won a "Best of division" for the most winning entries in the Youth competition. Those prizes come with real financial gain-so he's motivated to win as many as possible. He also came home with a sponsor's prize (Ball/Kerr jars) which meant several coupons for jars, pectin, etc. He's ordered his canning priorities by things that are most likely to win, and if there are any apricots left over, he'll bottle nectar or something like that. I had to draw the line at two cases of apricots because they're $$$.

    Danny will be doing it all again next month with sweet cherries, and then right before the fair he'll get his baked goods in order.

    I just buy the fruit and do the dishes-the rest is up to him ;)

    @Beth
    Thank you. I've taken to drinking hot water, something I learned from my grandmother. It seems to be helping.

    @Veronica
    I'll have to see if t I can get a look at the series.

    The last time I had a serious flu was my 21st birthday. I worried it was going to be my last (Birthday). It is hard to describe, but being so miserable is one thing but it makes me feel so incredibly stupid-like I can't string words together that make any sense. I've been reduced to pointing and grunting like a toddler, and thankfully my family sort of understand me.

    I really am doing better. Thank you for the well wishes.
