The Owls Are Not What They Seem

We're halfway through watching Twin Peaks. Yeah, I don't know why either, but I did enjoy it when it ran originally, so it seemed like a good time to revisit the series before the new ones are made. I can't binge-watch it in hours long sessions, which I think is for the best. I am finding it much funnier than I did years ago, but maybe that's just me being old(er).

Anyhoo, that seemed like as good a reason to drag out one of my (several) owl pendants. For someone that isn't particularly fond of raptors I seem to have an abundance of accessories bearing their feathered images. *Shrug*.  This one puzzles me, and I can't figure out if it is new or old. The chain is super-long, and I had to loop it around twice to be wearable, which makes me think, "old." On the other hand, there's something that's trying too hard at looking retro. Whatever the age, it is a fun necklace to perk-up an otherwise boring suit. know what else perks-up a boring suit? Boots, that's what.

 See? Perked that shit right up, didn't it? Boots, the boring suit's best friend.

I couldn't believe my luck finding this lightweight, wool suit at the Council Bluffs Goodwill last week. Old Hong Kong pieces are getting scarce, and they aren't always in very nice condition. This suit looked unworn (and the pockets were still stitched together). This time of year, lightweight wool is a welcome addition to a Nebraskan's wardrobe. Grey isn't my best colour, and I tried every possible colour combination with it from white (too twee) to claret (too collegiate). I went with black as I was in a hurry and didn't feel up searching for my camel polo neck, and in the end, I think it worked. At least I finally found an occasion to wear this lurex top I've been hanging onto for a couple decades.
 I like a bit of sparkle around my neck. Sure, I'd prefer a diamond necklace, but the polo neck works too.
 Outfit Particulars:

Grey British Crown Colony Hong Kong wool suit-Goodwill
Jones New York polo neck-Jordan Marsh (RIP) when I worked there (Shoppers World, Framingham in the old round building!)
Vintage earrings-Hand-Me-Ups
Brooch-Goodwill
Necklace-Goodwill
Boots-Hand-Me-Ups
1970's Shoulder bag-Goodwill
Fragrance-Dahlia Noir

 The brooch has a finding on the back to convert it to a necklace. That's a useful addition, and something I've had added to large brooches over the years. A good jeweler can do the work while you wait, and it isn't expensive.
What do YOU wear with grey? Any thoughts? Is simplicity best when it comes to "boring" but practical clothes, or do you go nuts with bright colours and funky accessories? Do tell!

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Ooooh, you look great in grey!

Hmmm, I haven't worn grey in so long, I've forgotten what I'd wear it with....but if I had a nice lurex top like yours, I'd wear that!

Beautiful suit by the way!! Love to hear the story of how you found it.

happy thrifting ;)

The combo of color and sparkle in the lurex top is insouciance stirred to a tasty froth on top of a classic cup of business suit! (Back in my copywriting days, if anything appeared boring to our young eyes, we called it "classic".) Add boots made for walking big city streets and you're good to go! But tell me, do the ladies who shop the Golden Mile in Chicago still wear those gorgeous scarves draped over their classic gray suits? I thought they were "joost for pretty, yah" until the lake breeze stirred and they were converted into babushkas, albeit tied at the cheek with a bow, a la The Queen.

Here in my modest Midwestern 'burb of a burg, those spectacular tights with the skirt and clogs would be much admired at ye persimmon pudding festivals. My current choices are blah black or blah brown leotards under the skirt and vest. Blah. Now I'm wondering what happened to my 70s pendants -- where and when did the owl flit away?

@Beth Waltz

How could I not know about the Persimmon festival?! OK, seriously, next year. I keep trying to explain the Midwestern devotion to persimmons to my family and get met with an eye roll. I won't buy them locally in stores at $3.99 each(!) for something we used to pick up off lawns in Illinois for free, but I would be in heaven on earth at a festival devoted to the fruit. I think people get freaked out by the fact it is mush by the time the fruit is suitable for eating-so it suffers a beauty problem. The other type you can eat unripe are pointless, in my opinion.

Seriously, remind me about this next summer so we can plan a trip.

I suppose part of the problem with grey is everything, and nothing goes with it. Maybe now that my hair is turning grey it looks better on me ;)

You look tres chic and very classy - but I can't find it in my heart to love grey, I just can't! But yes, the boots, an owl and some sparkle do ramp up the perkiness! xxx

The boots certainly did give the grey suit the boost it needed. I don't really do grey, you know me, I like it bright and colourful. But no matter what you wear you manage to throw an outfit together and it looks fabulous, I am thinking super model in a previous life maybe?

@Curtise
In general, I agree (about grey) but I'm willing to reconsider for quality clothing. There must be a better way to wear it, but I haven't found the magic combination yet.

@Sue
I'd be the supermodel falling flat on the runway!

Red. Hot pink. Yellow. I have a serious fondness for yellow and gray in combination.

Oooh, good suit. I generally pair grey with pink (because I have several pink/grey items), but I'd also match it to navy, yellow, sage green, white and black.

@Propagatrix
I just purchased an acid yellow pleated nylon skirt. I'll have to try it with a grey top. Thanks for the idea.

@Mim
My complexion is *so pink* that I really ought to avoid it (near my face anyway)but I love the sound of a sage green.
