Red Eye Makeup-for a stylishly ghoulish look

 October is finally in full swing-hooray! Time for red eye makeup. I confess, I didn't think this would be a look I'd wear, or that it would last more than a season. The thing is, red is so wearable-on just about everyone. You'll need to find the right shade for your complexion, but once you do there's something so wonderfully dramatic and unexpected about red eye makeup.
 I went somewhat tame here as it was a daytime look, but I will be posting a more elaborate red look at some point. Today, I wanted to show you how a subtle bit of red can enhance your eyes.
Here's another confession-that's a deep red blush on the lids and lip liner around the eye. Yup. I have recently purchased some proper red shadow, but this works as well.  To prevent looking like a bunny rabbit, I also used a bit of black eyeliner marker on the upper lid and a white pencil on the wetline. When your nose and cheeks are always bright pink, the bunny issue is a real concern (particularly in cold weather) but you may wish to try out one of the red mascaras available in the Halloween makeup lines. Stock-up too, as it often goes on deep sale 1 November.
Don't forget to pull your very best scary face-it is October, after all. BOO!
I manage this quite easily. Maybe she's born with it...maybe ...well yeah, I was definitely born with it.
I snapped this seasonal photo of Danny outside Hy-Vee. They always have such lovely displays this time of year. I'm not sure what, "Little Reds" are on the sign above (I didn't notice that until I loaded the photos) but I can only laugh and think, "I certainly hope so."

 Outfit Particulars:
90's skirt-Marshall's (I think)
Coldwater Creek blouse-Hand-Me-Ups
Koret jacket-Hand-Me-Ups
Boots-Hand-Me-Ups
Napier brooch-Goodwill
Vintage earrings-New Life Thrift
Bag-Goodwill
Fragrance-Samsara
Lippy-Revlon Black Cherry applied over a plum stain

 The blouse has so much going on with pleats and smocking and a bit of tulle peeking out at the hem. I do love it, but that middle band is really meant to be worn tighter and it is so loose it disrupts the line on me. It will be a fab piece on someone built for it, but alas that's not me and I am letting it go. I don't like the look of a sloppy blouse. The colour is great though, so I'll be looking for something equally shimmery in a wine colour.
 The skirt has an even more interesting underskirt that *just* shows through the sheer top layer. The effect is pretty neat, but unfortunately it doesn't photograph well.
I've had it for years, but I've yet to grow tired of it. I'm glad I kept it as sheer 90's skirts are having a moment again.

Have you tried wearing red eye makeup, or is it just strange for you?

That cranberry red eyeshadow has been trending for a long time now. It looks fab on everyone I've seen it on so I'm not surprised! Remember when red & pink eyeshadow was a "fashion don't"?

I wear some shade of pink eyeshadow everyday. Pink is my neutral color, (particularly cool pinks) it just makes the green in my eyes & my warm complexion pop. Flamin' hot Barbie pink, muted beige-y pink, silvery metallic pink,glittering coppery rose gold, or purplish mauve. I'm not sure if it started due to my fascination with Kabuki makeup or being a teen in the 80's. I'm also one of those weirdoes who uses blush & lipstick as eyeshadow. I like the monochromatic look where my lippy, blush, and eyeshadow are the same shade. I pair it with black or charcoal grey kohl kajal.

Fashion fail- I tried the 'glossy lid' trend of using lip gloss as eyeshadow. It looks glossy and great for about 20 minutes then creeps, creases, and fades to a sticky mess. Double thumbs down.

I was looking at a discontinued red eye shadow by Mac on eBay a couple of days ago, having seen how good yours looks I'm seriously tempted.
That blouse is lovely but if it don't feel right then it's gotta go.
Love that photo of Danny and that glorious pumpkin display. That truck rocks. xxx

I have become completely distracted by that pick up truck, that is gorgeous! Oh how I would love one of those. A girl can dream.

I think I may have worn red eye make up at one point, as I also used to wear glitter gel as eyeliner and went around with stars stuck to my cheekbones! I was a huge LA glam fan back in the nineties, so anything went really!

I would love to try red eyeshadow. I wear purple and pink almost every day, so a red isn't far off from the norm. I have used blush as eye makeup and sparkly eyeshadow on my cheekbones as highlighter...the names are just suggestions, right?
That's a cool skirt! So much great color and pattern going on in one garment.

I might just give red eye makeup a try — I think it would work well with my dark hair and colorless skin.

I have tried red, and I think I've still got one kicking around from the 90s somewhere, though I'm not convinced it's my best colour. With my fake hair and naturally red cheeks it all gets a bit much. You have lovely dark hair and eyes (something I always wanted!) and can carry it off better. Though perhaps I should go crazy with the green for Halloween...

I look forward to seeing what shimmery wine blouses you find. Happy hunting!

There was a time I experimented with red eyeshadow, although like you I used blush. I'm not sure red eyeshadow even existed back then. It is no longer me, though. What a pity about the blouse, but if it doesn't fit properly or doesn't feel right, it's best to let it go. Says she who always finds excuses to keep things anyway ... The lining of that skirt is fabulous, it would have been great as a top layer. Loving the brooch and earrings, too! xxx

Both red and purple eye shadow make me look as if I'd gone a few rounds with Muhammed Ali! I've bought and tried purple eyeliner pencil but that makes me look as if I've been crying, so I stick to green, dark blue, black, brown and grey eye pencils and very occasionally green eye shadow...

It looks fab on you!

@Bibi
Ugh no-the glossy stuff makes everyone look like they need to wash their face.

@Vix
We still have many trucks like that on the roads in Nebraska. Farmers tend to hang onto stuff if they can keep it running.

@Melanie
They're hard climbing into wearing heels-trust me on that one!
Oooh, I do love glitter.

@Bobbi
I would think with your complexion and hair red would be great. I love purple eye makeup and lipstick but it looks terrible on me.

@Propagatrix
Go for it. Try the cheap stuff first though, in case it is too goth for you.

@Mim
Now's the time to stock up on bright green mascara for Halloween to wear all year-would go great with your witch doctor dress. When I had green contact lenses I would wear it to great effect.

@Ann
I think back in the 80's I was wearing bright green and blue on my eyes-never thought to try red.

@Veronica
Just tell everyone you won with a KO in the third round ;)

Hey there! I am so envious of your perfect porcelain skin. And wow, I never thought of pairing a purple outfit with an orange jacket. How perfect is that? I think I'll give it a go some time this week. I happen to have two or three orange or coral blouses that I can pair with one purple skirt that has a gold Lurex print. I can't believe I never thought of this combination before. You really do have such a good eye for color, something that doesn't come naturally to everybody. :)

It took me a long time to find the perfect shade of pink eye shadow that's actually flattering. But I'm still trying to find the right shade of magenta or red. You really nailed it, so I'm convinced I can do the same if I just set my mind to it.

As for the "little red's" sign, I believe it refers to the nickname of the pickup truck shown in the photo with your son. Check this out:

Hope you and your family have a great Halloween!

Red eyeshadow is very "Yen Ching"/Chinese Opera -- and you've made it work! Now draw a navy blue eye liner and "so!"

The berry colors suit your complexion and honor the season. Those orange fabrics are really "pumpkin" tones, aren't they? The beaded velvet bag is lusciously luxe in color and texture!

@Emily
Thank you. I never would have thought it was the truck (I assumed it was some reference to "Go Big Red" or such). My skin is rather blotchy, but airspun powder hides a LOT!

I can't wear pink eyeshadow-I've tried (and failed). Experimenting with colour is fun-it took me years to understand I could wear green
with red outside of Christmas.

@Beth
Oooh, never thought of blue eyeliner...gonna try that one.

I have never once worn makeup, but I do like the reds on you. The coral brocade jacket it fabulous and so great with the wines outfit beneath, I'd never have though of such a combination, very inspiring!

@Radostin
You don't need makeup :)

You are too kind! When I went to get my hair done for my wedding (the only time I've ever had my hair done, incidentally; I told her to pretend she was doing a girl's hair for her bat mitzvah: I wanted soft and romantic and minimal product, rather than enormous and solid like a brown meringue) all the ladies waiting for their "do"s to set told me I had to get made up or I'd look awful and no one would see me, and I wouldn't show up in the photos. I just laughed, and though I really don't say this sort of thing about myself, I must say I glowed and looked stunning in the photos! ;)
