Caramel Oatmeal Brownies

From an undated (I'd guess 50's) pamphlet of butter cookie recipes by Pillsbury.

You Will Need:

Base:
1/3 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup oatmeal
1/3 cup melted butter

Sift flour, soda, oatmeal, sugar, and salt together. Melt butter and mix into mixture.
Press into an ungresed 8x8 pan and bake in a 350 degree F. oven for ten minutes.

Brownie Layer:

2/3 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons butter
1 ounce unsweetened chocolate
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Sift together flour, soda and salt. In a double boiler over hot water (or in the microwave like I did) melt together the chocolate and butter. Beat in the sugar slowly. Beat in the egg. Add the flour mixture and mix well. Add the milk and vanilla and mix. Spread over oatmeal layer and bake an additional 30-35 minutes. Cool, cut into bars or squares.

Those look awesome. I can feel the heroinesque rush of the sugar flowing into my veins, and the mental happiness of the taste and sweet sensation in my mouth. Aaaaaahaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I must tell you, these were really good. Every five minutes Danny kept wandering into the kitchen asking if he could have another. I don't ration treats around here because he's usually sated after one, but with these, even Danny had no control. The next morning, he bolted out of bed and into the kitchen to make sure I hadn't finished them after he went to bed. I've never seen him react so strongly to any food.

See? Even just on the printed page (er, screen), these look awesome. And I was right, judging from Danny.

Ohhhh, man.. I hate that I'm on a diet.. (hey, down ~30+ lbs!).
